So here's my set for
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-community.gif)
Everyone's sets for this round have been aaaawesome and super cohesive but here I am all over the place with my color combos and basically everything. I happily mixed both color wheels, but I specifically wanted to work with colors and combinations I don't often use - so that's why the heavy focus on reds! And no, I'm not organizing these by color cause that just highlights that I used mostly red+green and red+cyan :p
I wanted to go to a very different direction from my last set. Those icons were bright, shiny, and fairly simple, so in this set I wanted to do gritty, text-heavy, contrasted, bold, 'in your face' icons. I also tried to use more close crops than usual but I got kinda sidetracked from that so there aren't as many as I had planned. Anyway, this set was a very interesting challenge and I had a lot of fun - hopefully someone is crazy enough to enjoy these, and if you do please let me know :D Hover for color details and fandoms. (I mean most of these are from one fandom... I've really fallen in love with DW again this year. Aside from Survivor, it's the only show that still inspires me.)

And they all work so well together, which is just unreal! Also, 30=YES. ALL THE PARKS & REC.

I freaking love Parks&Rec, it's such a perfectly fun show with great characters! I should icon it more often.
So glad you liked these and even found them inspiring, thank you so much!! :>

I like the "noise" effect/texture on the icons. Is that the right term? (Like setting a layer to HSV or RGB noise to get a grainy texture?)
My favorite is 20 (Kira with those words!)
Kudos!

Yeah, noise is a good term, I usually do it with gritty textures, but it could also be done with a filter, probably.
Haha, Kira was kinda screwed by the writers with the way she was removed from the story so suddenly, and then I find that cap where she looks kinda pissed off, soooo I had to use that text xD glad you like it!

It's so hard to pick favorite!
2&6 has so stunning contrast and color! And text! Love it!
4 - I adore grunge style this and animation is super cool!! Fantastic idea!
5&10 - super yellow/blue color here and texture use! ♥ I love purple&yellow of 10!
9- Fantastic crop!!
12 has stunning bg and grunge texture!! The character is cut-out so fantastic and I love the crop! And text in the background is so cool!!
14 - WOW!!!! ♥ So super fantastic animation and the colors pop-up!!

But of course the complex compositions immediately give away that you made them. :D
I really like the gritty look you went for this time, and the unusual colorings (especially 3, 11, 13, 14, and 16). My faves are the complex ones (5 and 10 most of all), I am just in complete awe of them, as usual.
I like the slightly arrythmic animation in 14, it keeps drawing the eye.
Great work!!

Super glad you like the complex ones! I don't know why my instinct is always to go for complex, when I know that simple icons look better most of the time. I guess I'm trying to express something about my subjects and can't think of a way to do so with minimalism, but that sounds like a limitation in imagination and something I should work on. I'm really happy you appreciate them anyway!!

How's it coming? I am skipping this month, the theme is not my thing.
I don't know why my instinct is always to go for complex, when I know that simple icons look better most of the time.
Why would they? I loooove complex ones. And yours are amazing. I love it when icons hint at something much bigger - like you're looking at something that should not fit into 100x100 but it somehow manages. That is the best thing ever.
can't think of a way to do so with minimalism, but that sounds like a limitation in imagination
I always think I should do more complex, but can't either. It's fun how we challenge ourselves to do the opposite of what comes naturally - and I think that's how it's supposed to be! Challenging oneself is fun! <3

It's going ok, I only need one more icon and to finish a few and to select which I'll include in the actual set and which ones will be alts. I was super inspired by the inspo post. The theme is not like anything I've ever made but I love my set this far, I mean I can never be 100% happy with a post but I do like it much much more than this one! I don't think I've ever actually watched a film noir movie, but if my understanding of the genre is at all correct, I think I did ok capturing it. Or at least some parts of it.
Why would they?
I think it's that the more things you try to do in an icon, the more can go wrong. For example if I'm using multiple caps, the chances that at least one of them is badly colored, contrasted, sharpened or awkwardly placed are much greater than if I only used one cap! Every element I add is another risk that can go wrong. Also, I notice that at least personally when I make a simple icon I use more time of the basics (quality, lighting, coloring, contrast) than if I make a super complex composition. Which means that a minimalistic icon will be more polished, and 'polish' is definitely something I look for in other makers' icons, even if it's not that present in my own.
Besides, even a perfectly made complex icon won't be everyone's cup of tea, there are so many people who think they look busy, messy, unfocused, bury the subject, overworked, nonsensical etc no matter what. But is there anyone who will hate a well-made minimalistic icon? Therefore I've always felt that there is a dilemma I need to solve - do I want to take the greater chance that more people are going to like my work, or do I follow my own inspiration and what I have more fun creating? Obviously I've chosen the latter 9 times out of 10, but it's not an easy decision to make.

peoplecoloring yet these grungy textures, and the vibrancy of this set is amazing. Can't wait for next set!Know your boo! More Parks and Rec icons please please please!
Also hello! I haven't seen you/your icons in a while :)
no subject
Yess I should definitely icon Parks more. Such a great show! Unfortunately I watched most of it during my thesis work so I couldn't spend a lot of time on icons at the time, but I should rewatch some of the episodes now to spark my muse!
And thanks so much for the seriously wonderful feedback. I'm definitely no mastermind, haha, but I'm SUPER happy you like these!! ♥

Also your every post is amazing, I envy how you make those vibrant and complex icons! :)

Yes, we could totally do a P&R battle when you're finished, especially if there's still time to prepare :D but I have to admit I suck so bad at organizing battles/activities/ANYTHING. Basically I just forget about them even if I'm excited about them so I feel like we need a really simple theme/concept, nothing that requires a lot of planning or organizing... Idk! Would you prefer chosen caps or technical themes or some other way to do a battle?
And thanks again, that means so much! :3 Good luck & success for the thesis writing!

How am I only seeing these now, they are so amazing?! Vibrant grunge/grittiness is my favourite thing so obviously I think this set is wow! Idk, the colours are fantastic but at the same time the set has a dark vibe to it that I find really appealing.
(Don't mind me, really)The Doctor Who icons! I love the saturation, lighting and texture of 3, it all works so beautifully with the cap! 6 is another favourite with the crop and text (also this quote *sobs*). 4 is a lot of fun and looks rather punk to me (Idk?!) which suits Nine perfectly. And 5! How do you composition? It's so vintage and dreamlike and beautiful.
The close crops are great, I especially like the Sarah icon. But did you make a Grant Ward icon? And are you watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D? (Maybe you've made AoS icons before but I was too awol to notice :o)
Other favourites are 1, 2, 10, 12 and the amazing 17 and 18, both of which have brilliant compositions. ♥

But did you make a Grant Ward icon? And are you watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D?
Ok so this is going to be a WEIRD explanation, but since you asked... :D
Sometimes when I want to make a multifandom set, I do this thing where I randomize the subjects (from a list of shows/movies that have been iconned and posted at boxedcolors) and then watch an episode of that show and take notes and afterwards create an icon from it. It's a great way to add fandom variety and make sure that I'm inspired every time. So my initial thought was to make this entire set that way, with 20 random fandoms, buuut then the DW ideas kinda took over so not all of the subjects were selected that way, but anyway that's how the AoS icon came to be.
Thanks again for the wonderful feedback! ♥
