This is my set for the 5th round of

10in30, which was all about music inspiration, which is one of my favorite types of inspiration! I love it when a challenge makes it so easy to use text, in fact I somehow ended up putting lyrics on every single icon even though that definitely wasn't the plan when I started. This set is 100% ridiculous but I'm so much more happy with this set than my last one, and I really hope you'll like some of these! I've noticed that usually people prefer to make muted/vintage-colored icons for period pieces, but but BUT. Neon colors. They wanted to happen, so I let them (the only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it) :D

Dorian Gray is my new favorite story. I saw the 2009 film first and then read the original novel and I just love both. This set focuses on the experience-seeking, hedonism, and vanity aspect of the story cause it fits both my iconing style and my music library better :D but I love the tragic and angsty and gothic horror parts just as much and might use them for some other icons soon. (or maybe not, I really should take a break from iconing right about now so I could get somewhere with my thesis)

Song inspirations:

1. X-perience: Mirror
Ok, this is cheating a little cause this song is almost definitely about the book so when I quote the lyrics I'm actually quoting the novel. But to make it a bit more of a challenge I also wanted to incorporate the title literally by using a mirror frame :)

2. Pet Shop Boys: The Sodom and Gomorrah Show
Basically about Henry's influence on Dorian. As you can see all of my interpretations are super literal. Like, I can totally see Henry literally advertising this kind of experience to Dorian, so why the hell not. :p

3. Steam Powered Giraffe: Me and My Baby (Saturday Nights)
Well, for them every night is a saturday night, but otherwise this song is definitely Henry and Dorian's theme song. Also I wanted to take this chance to introduce my favorite obscure band, Steam Powered Giraffe. They make weird steam-punk inspired songs with lots of cool storytelling in the lyrics, each album has its own story. This is one of their more 'normal' songs and makes sense on its own, but I also love the steam punk robot songs like Clockwork Vaudeville and Automatonic Electronic Harmonics, and the space adventures from the latest album. My top favorite of their songs is definitely The Suspender Man. But yeah, the lyrics in all of these are so out there that good luck using them with ANY fandom :p)

4. Lana del Rey: Carmen
I've already used this song for a Dorian icon (13 in this post), then I was inspired by the double life theme in this song but this time I used the parts about how lots of men and women find the titular character charming and attractive. (I know this song is about a prostitute but it still fits Dorian so well, even if he's not one.)

5. Pet Shop Boys: It's a Sin
Story of Dorian's life, no explanation needed :p

6. Killer: Naughty Boy
This is a finnish band and the song is from 2003 so I'm preeetty sure nobody here has heard it, and I'm not really sure how well it fits Dorian anyway but it happened to play while I was thinking of icon ideas and I was inspired by the repeated word 'naughty' and the 'devil without the horns and the tail' lyrics which I took to the logical conclusion :D (yeah I warned this would get silly)

7. Panic! at the Disco: Emperor's New Clothes
Well this just screams Dorian to me, he sure likes his fun and all the fancy things he can get his hands on :D and why yes, I did use Carnivalee Freakshow, one of the outdated trend fonts that nobody wants to touch anymore, lol. I actually really like it and it just fit so well so why not ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I feel like this icon sums up my iconing style tbh.

8. Pet Shop Boys: Flamboyant
I used this song as an excuse to do that to his clothing. Sorry, Dorian, but nobody is safe from my questionable artistic alterations! I think this song fits nicely with the theme of his obsession on eternal beauty, and how Dorian gets used to getting a lot of attention for his looks, and how he learns to use his beauty to get what he wants and how his lifestyle alone ultimately makes him (in)famous in London.

9. Sin with Sebastian: Shut Up and Sleep with Me
Couldn't resist, sorry not sorry :D The song about exactly what it says on the tin so that's what I used for inspiration. I used a lot of willpower for not getting particularly attached to this ship because it would hurt too freaking much, poor Basil :'( but I definitely enjoyed their kiss scene in the film and was stunned at how badly hidden the 'subtext' was in the original novel. It was lovely UNTIL IT WASN'T DD: Also. I did not think about how useful any of these icons are as, you know, userpics. I can't imagine anyone actually commenting to anyone else with this one :') but hey, this is a nonexistent fandom so nobody would probably have had use for any of these anyway :p

10. Panic! at the Disco - There's a Good Reason These Tables Are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven't Thought Of It Yet
This was the last song I picked, and it's not a perfect match but there are some lyrics that definitely fit Dorian, and the ones I used reminded me so much of the scene in the film when he returns from his adventures and everyone is stunned and a bit creeped out that he still looks the same.

My set was 13, 14, 16, 28, 30 and 31. Those icons took so much work and time, not to mention how high the bar was this round, so I was not expecting any placement at all. So thanks again for the votes and also for the concrit! I didn't want to touch these massive psds anymore, but all the tips were definitely welcome and something to keep in mind for future icons. (The alts for my t-r icons in this post were made before I entered, so the tips I got have not been applied to those at all :p)

OH MY GOSH, I LOVE THIS MOVIE TOO! I haven't seen any icon from it for like ages and now there are SOO MANY BEAUTIFUL ICONS! How did you do all of these vibrant icons?! This movie was so muted and all I could do was rather natural coloring with some vibrant decoration, and I so envy all your icon from this post! I can't choose any icon in particular, because all of them are absolute amazingness <3 <3 <3 <3

lol it would actually be more surprising if I had managed to make this a muted set, but nope, same old tricks with gradient maps, variations, color balance, selective coloring etc and vibrant icons were the result :p I bet your natural colored icons looked much better though and now that I know you've made some I have to investigate a bit - I haven't seen literally any icons of Dorian Gray and I would absolutely love to find some!

And yessss I so want to icon Caspian too. ngl I totally watched the Narnia films just to see him in another role :') if i give in and don't have a total iconing break in June, I'll probably icon Narnia for something. But no promises yet cause I reaaally should have that break...

PS. I'd need to have some tutorial about your general awesome coloring, I'd never be able to make such icons, probably even with your help, because your magic with all the stuff you mentioned is totally out of my league ;__; buut I'll be willing to learn everything! <3

Haha, idk how useful my tutorials are, I've made a few in the past but I don't think I really do anything that special in icons, like, I'd think that everyone basically makes them the same way so idk :D I miiight participate in the next ask the maker though (I haven't decided yet but it's possible) so if you want you could request a tutorial there. Normally I'm open for tutorial requests at any other time too, but right now is not a great time since I'm already procrastinating too damn much and a tutorial is exactly the sort of thing I'd use as an excuse to not continue my thesis, lol. But idk why you'd need them anyway cause your colorings are great and I promise there is nothing in my icons that is 'out of your league' in any way :O

OMG stop tempting me with these great ideas, I'd loooove a Dorian Gray + Narnia battle but at the same time I already have a sort of battle thing going on so if we'll have one, I'd need to ask you to wait until the last two rounds of my random character project are done and I'm not sure when that would be, maybe two months max, but could be less. But, it's definitely possible that I'll end up iconing it sooner for 10in30 or 20muses if one of them manages to lure me in next month :3

I get what you mean about the tone of the movie (haven't seen it but I LOVE the book). I think it works, maybe in an ironic way, because part of Dorian enjoying his life fully is just him having fun ? I don't know ^^;;; but it definitely works!

I love all the Dorian Gray ones! I loved that movie, and I love various adaptations about Dorian. :)

Omg, thank you :3 I'd love to see more adaptations since I've only read the novel and watched this one movie but I know there are tons of others - do you have any recs? I don't know much about the other adaptations except that Penny Dreadful is definitely too dark/gory for me, which is a shame cause I think I would have loved that version of Dorian too.

Well, my favorite ultimate adaptation is this one (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0037988/), with Hurd Hatfield. Even if you liked Penny Dreadful, and as much as I like Dorian Gray by default, I don't know if I'd rate that one one of my favorites. Reeve Carney does a great job, but that Dorian doesn't stand out to me as much as I'd like him to.

Dorian is also featured in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, played by Stuart Townsend, and while that movie didn't get very good ratings, I enjoyed it, and I liked Stuart's portrayal anyway. And then I love the movie you made icons of, so there's that one.

Someone also wrote a "sequel" to the book, but I didn't enjoy it, however if you ever wanted to check it out, you can catch a glimpse of it here (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/532719.Dorian).

And there's also the audio adaptation, The Confessions of Dorian Gray (https://www.bigfinish.com/ranges/v/the-confessions-of-dorian-gray), but I haven't gotten to listening to it yet.

There are many more out there, but these are the ones just off the top of my head. :)

No, I'm kidding, the icons make it perfect! The colors, composition and text are truly a work of art. It's really hard to pick a favorite since they all have something special going on. 7 is really awesome. Carnivalee Freakshow fits so perfectly (again^^) to the whole coloring, composition and definitely the lyrics. The coloring of 8 is great, just like the text on 6. I also love the blending/composition of 9 very much.

I bought the Penguin edition of the novel when I was hiding from rain in a bookstore a couple of years ago. I really liked it, but never got around to watching the movie.

Nah, you were right the first time, patd definitely makes things more awesome by default :D

I'm also glad to hear you liked the novel! I bought this uncensored original version but I'd like to read the 1891 book version at some point to see the differences and all the added chapters and scenes. From what I hear people have had mixed reactions to the 2009 movie, but I definitely recommend it (tbh I just watched it cause I saw a super pretty cap of it, I just find Ben Barnes ridiculously gorgeous and that was legit my reason for watching but in the end I loved almost everything about it so it was a good call :D).

That's cool, I didn't even know there were different versions...
A friend actually recommended the movie maybe a year or two after it came out, but at the point I wanted to read the book first. I watched it now! It's not the most awesome movie ever, but I enjoyed it. It's a story where it really makes sense to have a visual adaptation I think. A miniseries would also be great. Ben Barnes definitely looked good in it, so that's a completely legitimate reason to watch the movie :D

First of all I do really like your subject choice, this novel is one of my all time favourites and I really enjoyed the movie. And your set is absolutely gorgeous, I really love all of them, your use of text and compositions are stunning! My favs are 7 (the composition, text and colors combination is perfect) and 10 (omg, this quote fits Dorian so well).
