28 Les Misérables icons

Ok so this is my entry for the 24th round (aka: text round) at [livejournal.com profile] 20inspirations. I claimed Les Misérables (2012) because right now half of my brain activity consists of Valvert. WHAT is my ife and WHY am I obsessed with these old guys when there are so many cute young people in the movie, go figure. Their lines though, omg. EPIC UST I'M TELLING YOU :3

(omg I need sleep, I accidentally posted this whole freaking thing to a crossposting comm first, lmao. Hope I'm getting it right this time :p)

Er, anyway. Les Mis is so different from the stuff I usually icon, it's sad and dramatic as opposed to the fun, lighter and a bit silly things I'm usually into. With this in mind, I fully planned to take this as an opportunity to practise some deeper colors and more dramatic lighting and dump the pop art nonsense for a while cause it reeeeaally doesn't fit the vibe of the movie.
....
well you can see how well that worked out .___.
so let's just pretend that this is a totally valid representation of the movie, haha. Then again this is the only 20insp entry I've managed to make this far that I'm actually fairly happy with, cause I do see progress from the only other text batch I've made (about half a year ago), which was my main objective this time!

Also, I completely unintentionally ended up making 5 vibrant icons, 5 vintagey/light-colored icons, 5 that are a weird mix of color and bw, and 5 muted/dark/fully bw ones, so here's a vibrancy gradient :p

[01-05]
[06-10]
[11-15]
[16-20]

Rejects/extras/icons I failed to put text into

[21-25]
[26-28]

(sorry, rn I'm too lazy and busy to post textless versions of the icons in the entry, but if there's a specific one you'd like to see without text, just let me know, I really won't mind!)

Also, we are still working on the requests, I had to get this challenge out of the way first knowing how much time text icons take me, but we'll get them made and posted asap! :)

Any and all comments would really brighten my miserable buried-in-uni-work life :> ♥

These are amazing! You have a great sense of colour (particularly in the two/three/four tone icons), and I'm very impressed with all you've done with text here! I particularly love 1, 6, 10, 11 and 14.

Aww, thank you so much!! I'm so glad you think the two/three/four tone icons work cause I just can't resist overusing that technique all the time :D

Oh, these are beautiful! :D I am yet to watch LES MISERABLES, but these are beautiful. I especially love 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 (I just love the text use there!), 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19, and 20. I love your use of lighting and coloring especially, and composition. Wonderful work!

Also, good luck with uni! *Hugs*

And thanks for the good-luck wish too, though it's really my own fault that I'm super busy now, shouldn't have procrastinated so much earlier :p well, maybe I'll learn from it and know to start things earlier now!

So I saw this and immediately thought that's john_scorpy - and I was totally right! Your style is awesomely crazy. HOW DO YOU TEXT AND COLOUR AND AWESOME?

I love #8. There's something so cute and precious about it. I think it's the hat.

Omg, that is seriously flattering, it's so new and exciting for me to a) have a 'style' that people connect to me, and b) have someone call it 'awesomely crazy' which is like the greatest description ever :D just thank you so much!!

Lol, it's definitely the hat! I'm not even a huge fan of Cosette, but can't resist iconing her cause iconable character is iconable :3

Oh. My. God. If I finish my entry (the chances of that are 50/50 right now) I'll have to follow this. How fair is that?

The colors! The texture use! The lighting! The variety of text! It's all so gorgeous and perfect. I absolutely adore 6, 8, 9, and 14. 2 and 5 have such gorgeous and vibrant coloring. As does 1, which made me laugh. As for alternates, the coloring and lighting in 22 to 24 are fantastic as well.

omg, I don't even know how to respond to this cause your text is FLAWLESS and mine is like, getting better but not even close to flawlessness, so it's absurd that you'd say something like that :O
Seriously, thank you SO much for this super amazing comment! ;__;

They're wonderful! I love the colors in the vibrant ones! And the way you use text reminds me of a propaganda poster (in the best way). 6, 8, and 15 are just gorgeous. :)

Omg, thank you so much!! I love making things super hyper extra vibrant, so I'm really glad the vibrant ones work for you so well, I always fear I take it too far :>
And yay, some sort of vintage propaganda poster is exactly what I had in mind for some of these, especially 6, so I'm glad that's the association you got as well :D

Dude
Everything's
Amazing!!!
Daaaaaaaaaaamn!

- a poem by absolutelybatty to john_scorpy in honor of this entry being so freaking amazing.

Seriously though! These are so incredible! Comparing this entry to your older one, there are literally no words. Just, you know, stars and galaxies and unicorns. So that's trippy, but also just really amazing. I love love love 06 in particular. Old timey poster style for the win! And it is just so effective in that way. Definitely my favorite of the batch. I really love the whole vibrant row as well though. A lot of really unique stuff there, I think, and really quite daring as well, I think. I know absolutely nothing about this movie, but from what I've seen it seems more inclined to those muted colors so you taking them out of their element and doing it with style and grace is just amazing (& reading your entry text I can see you both noted this and despaired to which I say 'NAH. THIS STYLE IS COOLER.'). Also 19 is so spectacular; that's a brilliant black and white icon if I ever saw one, honestly. I will literally poke you in the eye if you ever tell me you suck at black and white again, okay? Awesome.

AWESOME WORK. <3

Also, at some point today I am going to watch the first episode of Defiance. Were you able to catch it? What did you think?
neonspider: babydoll yellow[personal profile] neonspider on April 20th, 2013 03:43 pm (UTC)
OMG, THIS COMMENT ♥

especially the poem, omg :D That's a first!

Eek, I'm just so glad you seem to think this is better than the previous text entry! \o/

And YAY you approve of my totally-not-fitting-Les-Mis interpretations :> one thing I fear these days is coming off predictable and boring, which is why I feel like I should maybe move around more stylewise and these types of challenges and new subjects would be the perfect opportunity to do so. So failing to do that, it's really comforting that there are people who think it's actually a good thing to do sort of have your own thing and stick to it, idk. This is ridiculous anyway cause half a year ago I was stressing of the opposite thing, being all over the place and not having my own style at all. Guess I just can't please myself ever :D

Thank you so much though, you're so freaking awesome!

Oh and thanks for reminding me of Defiance! I hadn't known it was out already, haha. I wouldn't have been able to catch it on tv anyway since I live in the middle of nowhere so it probably won't even get aired here in years, if ever .___. But fortunately there are, well, other alternatives, soooo I'll watch it later tonight :D

What is...how...why.....I mean...can you explain this post to me? My mind is unable to compute these levels of gorgeous. I mean, let's talk about 6 and how it's like some totally fabulous old movie poster. And about 11, because I think I can see the french flag lurking in there somewhere. And about 8 because it's vintage and pink. And 14 because there's some effin wonderful colour contrast going on there. And maybe 19 too, because that crop is just guh. Basically let's talk about the whole of this post.
neonspider: bedtime stories[personal profile] neonspider on April 20th, 2013 03:46 pm (UTC)

I'm trying to pick faves but I honestly can't. Consider this entire post faved for eternity, and every icon saved to my inspfolder. I do love 6, 8, and 14 a little more than the others - but shh, don't tell them </strike. Just. GORGEOUS.

I mean there are billions of things I can't do, like coloring for example, I end up doing the same vintage gradient map things or some partly bw weird coloring just cause I have no idea how to actually color stuff, lol!

eeek, I'm so flattered and thrilled about the inspfoldering, omg ;__;

LMAO I won't mention anything to the other icons ;D

But seriously. Beautiful icons. Every single one of them is a masterpiece. The coloring, texts, textures AND COMPOSITION (!) are so perfect that I don't even have words for the amaznig work you did here. And now I'm going back to my poor, miserable abilities in iconning :P

WHAT IS TEXT, COMPOSTION AND COLOURING SORCERY. WHAT. SERIOUSLY. I CANNOT.

*WAILS*

But let me collect me and tears and tell you which my favourites are. This is going to be a lengthy rambly comment. You have been warned. :D

1 - Love the colours and the way you did the text. And using their clothes colours to illustrate who the dialogue belonged too is PRETTY awesome.

2 - Love the colours and love the grunginess of the text!

4 - I sense a whiff of UST. :DDD I LOVE IT.

6 - THE TEXT. WHY SO AWESOME. WHYYY. This icon is all the text awesomness I will NEVER achieve.

8 - I love the colours and the vintage-yness (IT'S A VALID WORD OK.) of this icon!

13 - Ahaha. More UST. Seriously though, I love that the colours of their clothes are standing out so starkly against a colourless background.

16 - 20 - Okay, I love this entire bunch. Sure, they are dark but at the same time they have this lovely softness and poetic text going on. I LOVE THEM ALL.

22 - THE COLOURS. THE COLOURS. I love a good green. Especially a vibrant one. Also. THE TEXT. *_*

28 - The vividity of the red is really beautiful. And I love the texture work!

AWESOME POST IS AWESOME. DONT STOP BEING AWESOME. :D

asdadsasddfsf just thank you so much, especially for the detailed feedback, also you are totally lying about 6 because your text work is already on levels faaaar past mine for which I have just seen proof and will comment to your awesomesauce entry when my brain starts functioning again.

Yay, you approve of the dark ones, I was the least sure about those (it's the most out of my comfort zone, as far as colorings go!) so it's awesome to hear you like them that much :>

Looooll yes UST ALL THE WAY. \o/ and also the word vintage-yness. ♥

FUUUUUUUUUUCK THIS POST. It's filled to the brim with so much pretty and epicness that it HURTS.

I love how you used the tiny colored blocks to set the text apart in 1. It's so simple yet effective, and keeps the icon so clean and precise! It's also great that Javert's face seems to have light shining on it while poor Valjean is trapped in shadow. Very accurate considering their dynamics in the film, with Javert thinking he's right and just, and Valjean harboring dark secrets all his life!

4 is awwwwwesome. The repetition of Javert at the top accurately reflects his darkly looming presence all through Valjean's life. The blue neg space in Valjean's segment is so dense and vibrant! I like the yellowish light coming down from the left corner and the sparse, linear text is again, very neat and clean!

HOLY FUCKING FUCK WITH 6. ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. I love the dark coloring that's really become your signature in recent months, and the cutout is so perfectly sized and placed. BUT THE TEXT. THAT IS A THING OF TRUE BEAUTY. HOLY LORD. I love how "Vive la France" is stacked straightforwardly while the rest of the text flows upward, giving the icon a dynamic sense of movement! Damn, I wish I could make something like that!

7 is also fantastic with his black coat serving as the backdrop for the multi-hued text. Very patriotic, too, with the colors of France's flag! The lighting in Javert's face is gorgeous, too.

8 looks like a cameo. So pretty and elegant and classic. The purple is so delicate and soft, and the frame around the super tiny text is a lovely detail. Love the texturing on the sides!

FML. THE SHADOWING IN 18 IS MIRACULOUS. Dying over how dark and dramatic 18 is. You can only see half their faces, and yet you get the full impact of their plight and how terrified they are. Digging the unreadable cursive text scrawling at the bottom. It's such a refined and subtle detail!

The close crop in 19 is truly magnificent, and the linear stacking of the text is just perfection. I love the dark, fierce vibe of that piece and the contrast of the light text against the inky blackness in most of the icon.

There's a sophisticated yet epic feel to this whole post that reflects the movie so well. Kudos on everything, Tommi. Seriously. Your text work drives me mad with envy!

Omfg, thank you so much again for the amazing feedback!!

I must admit I'm overwhelmed by all the love for 6 - I had a concept in mind, but it was so ambitious that I wasn't sure I'd be able to pull off the actual execution. The positive response to it definitely encourages me to try ambitious things with text in future too; thank you so much for that ♥

18 was another one that I liked but wasn't sure if it would look any good to anyone else, cause it was SO dark and weirdly colored and also I don't use text textures often so I don't even know how to place them. So glad you like this one so much :>

asdadfdf I'm just thrilled you think so highly of my text use in this post, I still think I *could* have done even more with it (especially after seeing some waaaaayyyy more creative sets by other makers - I wish my text was a bit less linear, I think I still worry too much about readability even though I'd actually like my text to be more of a compositional element than some information to be read, lol), but one step at a time :D

Omg HOW, just HOW !

Your style is AMAZING, it really fits well with the movie's atmosphere and the text goes in there SO well. Your work on text is perfect, it is a full part of your composition and this is brilliant.

I love #3, first because of that stunning coloring you pulled of, and the colors of the text. His pose and the font used transmit the way the line was used, which I find really cool. My second favorite is #6, because WOW hello amazing composition here ! I liked that you used French and the text is just so amazingly "in" that it is gorgeous. Here again, you pulled off a really pretty coloring. I love # 11 for the same reason, the text is truly well used. #13 is also amazing with its colors and how the text stands out.

Bref, un chef d'œuvre ♥

Omg, thank you so much for this amazing, thoughtful comment!! ♥ asdasdsad let me go squee over how you think my text works as a part of composition because a) that's exactly my main goal with text rn and b) you're THE BEST at that kind of text composition thing so your approval means a lot! *__*

(also big yay at 'fits well with the movie's atmosphere' cause that was the main thing I worried about - I thought everyone would be like 'why does he take a serious, dramatic movie and make super bright and/or campy vintage things with it?' SO glad to hear you think the opposite, aw :>)
