Martha Jones for 20insp + icon dump = 57 icons

Fandoms:

Ok, so I made some Martha icons for the 22nd round of

Um, I don't have much to say about this set, the challenge itself was awesome but major RL stress has been eating away my inspiration and the result doesn't feel like 'me' at all save for a few icons. Then again it was kinda fun too to make some simpler and more lighting-y icons for a change, I think that also helped me highlight the moods better, but at the same time I don't think I'll continue in this direction, and while I think they're nice enough, I don't think it's the best I could have done. So yeah, not sure what to think of this set, but I hope someone will like some of these :D

1 - pleasantly surprised, thrilled, can't believe her eyes; really vibrant neon color explosions.
2 - joy; yellow
3 - attraction; pink
4 - sense of togetherness, hope; earthy, warm browns
5 - 'blank', neutral, casual; muted, light browns
6 - appreciation of the past, respect, subdued sadness. wow, what a weird description, it makes more sense when you know the scene (from the end of Family of Blood). Anyway I chose a toned down vintage coloring with a bit of muted turquoise (which reminds me of the 'subdued sadness' part).
7 - confused; a conflict of colors, a weird combination of dark green and pale orange.
8 - worried; also turquoise but deeper and darker than in the vintage icon.
9-11 - defiance; (darkish) orange. Martha is at her best with this emotion imo, which is why I made three for it. In 9 it even looks like she's eyerolling at The Master :D 10 and 11 are from the same episode too, she's really defiant and determined against The Master and as much as I love the guy, Martha is really awesome and HBIC in those scenes.
12 - anger; red
13 - anger, action/fight. Reds and oranges.
14 - mysterious; purple
15 - surreal, weirded out; a really weird, unnatural neon color combination.
16 - scared, distressed; black
17 - quiet sadness; really pale blue
18 - melancholy, loneliness; deeper blue
19 - indescribable sort of melancholy, a bit surreal - they're looking at the ruins of a past civilization. I associate that with really muted and dark blue/purple tones.
20 - desperation, deep sadness; darkness, blue tones, pale/colorless
Then there's a dump of stuff I've been posting to various comms, mostly

I'd love any and all comments of course! :>

I would love the give you a more technical comment, but I'm so bad at giving this kind of comments ;_; anyway what can I say? I love your coloring and your text use, and I totally envy your creativity! ♥

Interesting texture use on the other icons as well. love the farscape ones of course. Te coloring on 46 is fabulous. :)
Really like the two Donna ones, especially the Agatha Christie one. :)
Nice Work!

I loved making that agatha christie one, cause it was for an episode-based challenge and I wanted to make the icon really literally related to the ep so... that happened, lol.

Let me just say WOW O: How do you icon DW? Especially the older seasons with Rose and Martha where the caps are an absolute nightmare to work with. You deserve some sort of award for just being so brave to do that, and then x10000 awards for making beautiful icons.
1 is so qt, I love it. I'm a sucker for borders and boxed/blocking icons, so it's totally up my alley C: And the colour explosion is wonderful. The colour scheme of 3 is brilliant. I absolutely adore your pink use. And ofc the ~patented vintage look that just slays me, because Idek how you manage to achieve it?! I'm 100% certain there's magic involved :P Like in 6 and 7 omg. Especially 7. I love the composition and the colouring of it. It's perfect. Also 9 is so awesome, because I love funny text on icons. The world needs more of those :D 12 is a beautiful monochrome and I'm digging the lighting. 15 though. 15 just woiehweiogherlng. That is surely done with magic. Ugh I think it's my fav from the entire batch! I'm in awe of the composition and colouring and just everything. It's so unique! And the rich blues on 18 are awesome. Aaaand the crop on 20.
32 is the other favourite of mine from this post, because composition and colours?? Ugh you just always make such amazing colour combinations I just owuihgiuergegeh
Everything in this post is beautiful and nothing hurts.

Ugh, you're so right about the caps though ;__; I struggled with that so much.
(Then again I struggled with everything cause inspiration, where are youuu.)I almost never watch anything new enough to be in super extra HQ caps, actually DW was an improvement from my previous obsession Farscape (the caps are not only MQ, but also horribly dark - DW at least has some light! :D). Anyway I'd rather make bad icons for something I'm passionate about than awesome ones for something I don't care for, so it's not really bravery, just the only option as long as my DW (and esp. Ten era) obsession continues :>no subject

From the 20inspirations set I really like 3, 4, 6, 8 and 11.
As for the rest, as I said before, man, your compositions are outstanding, saving several for inspiration :)

even if it took me re-watching her season to know that.I really, really like this batch. While it may be subdued, I think it let you play with more simple compositions that let your other talents shine (because composition > everything ever, as your compositions are amazing and insane all at once!). Like, cropping - #3 and #20 are magnificent crops, they have so much emotion, and the colours are just so gorgeously combined with that. And lighting, holy moly - #18 caught my eye straight away. I love, LOVE the lighting here - the crop is fantastic and the lighting just accentuates it so perfect. The lighting in #10 and #14 is also spectacular as well. #9 is sheer text perfection, I adore the colours you've used and the text is just awesome and amazing. And then the grunge, but subdued grunge of #16 is wow as well. Other favourites (just cos) are #13, because of perfect composition reasons, and #15, because just HOW does that come into existence? The colours are incredible and it just looks pop art perfect! And #17, because the muted tones are utterly fantastic and amazing.
And then there is everything else.
I looooove your colours. They are muted and grungy but vibrant all at once and it's just amazing. #27, #30, #42 and #54 are all perfect examples of this. But still, your compositions are always just divine and perfect. #31 is utter genius, I love how everything combines so perfectly to create an icon that tells this whole story. It's just magic. And #37, BOW TIES ARE COOL. IN A BOW TIE. Perfect, perfect composition. Just wow. #43 has some awesome sauce texture work going on there, the lines are insanely incredible, and all the circles in #52, again, awesome. I love the lighting in #34 (it's just amazing) and #51 is going straight into the most perfect icons you will ever see folder because it's Yoda and Pink all together. And the text work is awesome and amazing. Annnnnd then I just love #57 because it's pop art fantastic and the text is awesome and the texture work is insane and just YES.
Gorgeous, gorgeous, amazing stuff!

Anyway, I'm so glad to hear you like the Martha set - I suppose it's not that bad in the end, the past few days have just been kinda hellish so I probably wouldn't have liked the icons
or anything else for that matterno matter what it was like. Also, I'm always a bit lost without crazy composition, and the whole mood theme was sooo out of my box cause tbh my icons are rarely atmospheric or moody at all, since I usually remove the backgrounds and twist the whole vibe into something it wasn't before (which I didn't even realize before making this set!). This time I had to build on what was actually in the cap, which was really quite difficult but also something I'd like to get better at so this was really the perfect challenge to practise that :)And aww, I'm thrilled that you like the others too, especially the compositions cause I always fear they're so over the top that nobody will get them at all, haha. Also wow, I'm pleasantly surprised you like the Yoda one that much - I think it got the least amount of votes in that the7days set, so I didn't think it was very special really, but I'm glad you think it is cause I always have so much fun with that type of icons :D
Seriously this comment was the best possible thing to wake up to, thanks for giving this day a great start!! ♥

my favourite part about your 20insp set is the CROPS. the text work in your entire post is phenom too, but alksdjflaskdjfalskdjf the compositions. oh man, all of your compositions everywhere are just FANTASTIC. everything from the colouring to the texture use to the text work to the sheer creativity of 31, 32, 33, 36, 39, 43, 44, 47, omg am i just listing everything in this post? i feel like i am. i feel like i OUGHT TO. this post is amazing B) B) B)

Thank you so much!! I'm so glad you like the crops, cause I spent slightly more effort on it than I normally do (usually an alarming amount of my icons have center crop + negative space .___.). and asddffssaddsf you're just too awsome, thankyousomuch ^^

I think you've got such a distinctive style with textures and it makes for some truly outstanding icons. #15 for example is a wonder! The colors are so bold and dark and there's so much going on but the icon is not cluttered or busy.
That dark coloring has be pretty dominant in your work over the past months and it's really incredibly eye catching. So many people (including myself) shy away from dark, muted colors that your posts are always so refreshing. I particularly love 13, 28 and 34 (also the lighting on 34 is far, far too gorgeous to properly describe. Maybe when I've gotten over the major crush I have on this post ;D)
Lastly I absolutely cannot end this comment without paying homage to so truly spectacular crops. I'm looking at #3 in particular but 34 and 53 are just as beautiful! Really stunning post Tommi (I hope I'm getting your name right). Your icons have been incredible high quality of late :D

And aw, cropping hasn't usually been something I pay that much attention to, so I'm glad that people mention them now that I actually thought of them much more than usual :) (I made a new year's resolution to go do more with cropping, and my first post of the year did nothing of the sort, so I thought now would be a good time to try :D)

this is really late but you should know that appreciate this post very muchthe light/glowy coloring in 2 oh god its just beautiful, i must congratulate you by the way on your skills because caps from this season are a pain to color/crop/cut a pain, i love the season but i rarely made icons of it. and 3 PINK *.* i love it so much, and whaat a composition in 6, so beautiful and creative! the text and coloring on 7 are gorgeous. and look at those colors on 9 and 10, have i ever mentioned that hot red and orange colorings own my heart? and you seem to be mastering them. :D same goes for 14, and i love how you begin the batch sort of sepia-ish and then go all hot and vibrant with the coloring and then the last row is cold and muted. i really love 16, 17 and 19.

Yep, the caps of this season are pretty difficult (though I've had to use them many many times before, as half of my beloved Master caps come from s3! :p). I've never really focused on Martha before which is wrong cause she's awesome, so I'm glad that's fixed now :>

Loving the text in 1. It's all 3D-ish and that lends itself so well to the pop art feel of the icon as well as to the fact that it's a sci-fi show! The bright colors totally give me a "happy surprise" vibe, and then I looked at your explanation and realized that was exatly what you strove for! :D
2 is just buttery and golden and such a joy to look at! It's drenched in dense, warm lighting. It's one of my faves here!
4 feels more like your usual more complicated stuff, which I love! The text work is fantastic, and I enjoy that it's hard to make out at first cuz it makes me focus more on what's going on. It's also great how the white texture contrasts against her beautiful, natural skin tone. Brown icons aren't easy to make so kudos on this one! <3
If I saw 6 without your name attached, I'd still know it was yours. It's very, very TOMMI! I love how that deep aqua blue contrasts with the sepia framing around the image. Gorgeous detailing with the cut off text as well. I love how you often cut off the text in your icons!
The crops in 7 are heavenly. I adore when the face cuts off on the right and you see the rest of it on the left. That's one of those quirks I've recently realized I enjoy. The 3D text also works nicely here against the pink that pops against her face!
Hello there, gorgeously muted blue in 17! How did you come about? You sure are pretty to look at! The lighting is exquisite there, too! It conveys the depth of their sadness so perfectly.
Excuse me while I vomit over your the7days stuff. It's insanely beautiful! 24 is creepy and haunting and looks like a Gothic portrait or something. Loooove the muted tones in 25. Reminds me of hauntes and the text is awesome, too! 31 makes me wanna slap you cuz it's too divine to exist. The coloring is fabulously subtle and low-key, and I adore how she's juxtaposed against the book cover! The orange and yellow background in 32 makes me wanna weep envious tears. 37 has just the fuckin' coolest composition! So clever to have used a bowtie silhouette and it has such an art pop feel to it with the bright, crazy color combo! The circular framing in 48 is just incredible and so is the text. WHY MUST YOU BE SO DAMN GOOD AT TEXT?! It also kills me in the Yoda icon. KILLS ME. The crop in 53 is killer and so aggressive and bold!
I kinda wish I could un-see this post cuz it makes me jealous of your skills. It truly does. Your rate of progress in composition and text just leaves me speechless. Okay, not quite cuz I'm obviously rambling, but IT SHOULD leave me speechless, and that's what's important! Even if you didn't feel quite inspired to make that 20insp batch, I commend you for pushing through and finishing it, and it's certainly different from your regular fare so clearly you challenged yourself. That's something extra to be proud of! It's really cool to see you deviate from your comfort zone and just keep learning new things. You told me about some of that stress you've recently endured, and I hope this past weekend went well so that you can breathe a bit more easily now. Just continue to grow and enjoy and experiment, Tommi, cuz you do it so fantastically! <333333333

Aw, I'm so glad you found something to like about the 20insp set too. I have to admit the text in 6 came from a texture, I use text textures very seldom but this was one of those cases so I can't really take credit for its arrangement... but I'm really glad to hear you think that icon is somehow 'me' because it wasn't long ago when I was still stressing about not having any distinctive style. I think the past few months have been more about exploring possibilites there rather than making technical progress, so I'm reaaally flattered to hear that it seems to have worked in that at least someone thinks there is some 'Tommi' component in existence :D
And YAAY I'm so glad you approve of the the7days stuff, I've been so inspired by those challenges. Especially the shape one that almost nobody did, because without it weird icons like the bowtie one surely wouldn't have happened. I love technical challenges like that cause they always force me to come up with new ideas! (
or die trying)dadasdasdasdsad the best thing is to hear you think I've improved at text though, cause it was the thing I've usually seen as my weakness and swore to improve it a lot this year :> I still have a long way to go but it's great to hear that you think I'm on the right path!
And yes, I've been sooo much better now that we actually got that damn teamwork done and communicate much better as a group now. It still sucks a lot to know that me and my stubbornness and lacking social skills were the only real reasons for our problems, but hey the completed assignment is great so that's what matters in the end :>
THANK YOU AGAIN KIM FOR BEING WAY MORE SUPPORTIVE AND AWESOME THAN I COULD POSSIBLY DESERVE!!! ♥
