20 Doctor Who icons

Ok, so here is my set for [livejournal.com profile] inspired20in20, round 17 - Nostalgia.

Omg guyyyys. This round inspired me so much and I wanted to make a set inspired by mainly stuff from my own past and somehow tie it to DW and the inspiration post and everything. And I would have, but then exam week and all kinds of deadlines happened and I realized I was making things unnecessarily difficult so uh what you see instead is just a random bunch of icons inspired by the general timey-wimeyness of DW (perfect claim for the round!), some retro styles, and of course the inspiration post.

I have a love/hate relationship with this set cause I put a lot of thought into each icon and was really really inspired like I said and even experimented quite a lot with some things I might like to take further in my future icons, but on the other hand I also ran out of time so I had to accept most of them quicker than I usually would have, so they have billions of technical imperfections and stuff I'd like to tweak ._.

Hope you find something to like anyway! :>

[1-5]
[6-10]
[11-15]
[16-20]

Inspirations:

Icons 1-9 were mostly inspired by in-verse stuff - a lot of the given words fit well with DW. This part contains some s5 spoilers.
1&2: Childhood
3: Flashback - loved that scene in Vincent and the Doctor where Amy sees the dedication on the painting :')
4&5: Remember - forgetting and then remembering has such a big part in Amy's sory on s5, so these icons represent that. 4 is from the scene where Amy sees her ring, with Rory being erased from time, and that scene always gives chills. And 5 is of course a happier one, where Amy remembers the Doctor back into existance.
6: Longing. Why yes, I still love these two, and this scene is so angsty and beautiful. Well, at least until the Master starts talking about food :p
7: Past. A past Master! I haven't actually seen any of them in action yet, but I chose Delgado because based on what i've read I think I'll love him the most. Also he was the original and thus perfect for this theme.
8: This has two inspirations, thematically it was inspired by the theme 'History' as I instantly thought of the lulziness of River impersonating Cleopatra in this ep. Don't ask why, no idea. And visually I was inspired by the deep reds of this icon by [livejournal.com profile] val_valerie.
9: Texture set by [livejournal.com profile] scoobyatemysnax, and I chose this episode cause I wanted as many 'in the past' episodes as possible.

Icons 10-15 were mostly inspired by various retro styles/things and have less to do with the images themselves.
10: Inspired by this icon by [livejournal.com profile] vetica, and also a muted vintagey look in general. This was actually the first icon I made and what the rest of the set was supposed to be like, but something happened and my inspiration just took a U-turn... like it tends to do.
11: Inspired by the theme 'Retro' which first made me think of K9, the retro tin dog ♥ also uses tons of [livejournal.com profile] scoobyatemysnax textures.
12: This too has just 'Retro' as the general theme, although I'm not even sure what type of retro it's trying to be. Maybe like a colorful but a bit worn down poster? ugh idek well I tried :o Oh and ofc, some scooby texture abuse.
13: This certainly tries to look like another sort of retro poster.
14: inspired by/uses [livejournal.com profile] longerthanwedo textures, and also a general vintagey look.
15: composition inspired by retro diskettes ♥ except that's not where you write the label on a real diskette, oops.

Icons 16-20 are more like the types of icons I planned on making, cause they have some meaning to my own past while still using the inspiration post as the starting point. I was halfway into rambling about each of the meanings already but then realized they were not very exciting as stories at all, lol, so I'll just spare you unless you specifically want to know why I did what I did with one of these :) The inspiration post inspirations where the train of thought started were:
16: This icon by [livejournal.com profile] spittingfish
17: textures (all the provided packs)
18: [livejournal.com profile] scoobyatemysnax textures
19: Innocence
20: This icon by [livejournal.com profile] jokermary

I know this set is a bit weird but please share your thoughts anyway, any comments always make me super happy :)

I have some other challenge icons to post and I planned on doing so here but I think I'll leave them for another day cause tiiiiired. One of my new year resolutions will have to be to stop freaking procrastinating and/or signing up for too many things at the same time! :p

Funny that you see so many technical flaws or whatever when many people, myself included, would say that this is one of your best batches yet! I know all makers are their own worst critics though, so I suppose it comes with the territory. Anyway, this post is amazing, and I say it every single time but that doesn't negate its truth: You've grown so incredibly fast this year! You and [livejournal.com profile] burntheflaws and so many other makers have really stunned me with the insane progression and development you've shown in just a handful of months! Now on to the actual icons! :D

I dig how much complexity there is in 2! The pink and yellow combo for the text really grabs my attention, and I love that there are different crops so that the image repetition doesn't get tiresome. Instead, it's fresh and quirky!

10 is absolutely marvelous, my friend. MARVELOUS. It's got such a delicate, ethereal, elegant vibe to it. The dusty rose coloring gives it a somewhat haunting quality, IMO, as if she's someone who got lost in time and space. Don't know if that's the case since I've never gotten through an ep of the show, but I love the feeling that icon imparts! It's really busy without going overboard or looking jumbled.

11 is awesome cuz of it's grittiness, and the way it looks like a pop art piece. The green neg space is so soothing and cool, and the text is positioned and sized so perfectly. The cutout is very clean yet the gritty texturing makes it feel dirty, too. That's really neat!

12 has tremendous coloring and blocking. It also conveys a pop art punch to me, and I love the deep richness of the coloring. My fave detail is her lush pink skirt overflowing into the turquoise blue block. Don't know why, but that's a small thing that really caught and captivated my eye!

16 is super vibrant in the background and yet the subject has a deep but muted coloring. I really enjoy that juxtaposition. My one quibble would be that it seems as if she should be scaled down a tad to allow the space to flow around her sides/shoulders more. I think my neg space bias may just be showing though.

18 is so dark and mysterious. I love that I almost can't make out who's in the icon. That only adds to the mystery! It reminds me of Harry Potter though I can't totally say why. The dark blue and the majestic bordering scream "WIZARD PORTRAIT" to me. Weird, I know.

KEEP GROWING AND EXPERIMENTING, TOMMI. IT'S ENDLESSLY FASCINATING TO SEE WHAT ODDITIES AND FUNKY CREATIONS YOU'LL DREAM UP NEXT! <333333

OMGWOW, THIS COMMENT :OOO Surely I can't deserve all this but THANK YOU SO MUCH KIM YOU ARE AAAAWESOME.
And asdasdfadasdas I'm so glad you keep saying that I keep growing as a maker cause I always stress that at some point I'll just disappoint everyone and they'll be like 'hmm used to be decent but has produced mere crap recently', lol. So I'm just glad that this set doesn't seem to be that point yet. But maybe you're right and all makers are their own worst critics :p

Omg I'm squeeing a bit at this because that description really REALLY fits Rose (the character in the icon).

Ooh thank you!! Also for the concrity part, I think you might be onto something there! Who doesn't love negative space :D here's a more negative spacey version:

It reminds me of Harry Potter though I can't totally say why. The dark blue and the majestic bordering scream "WIZARD PORTRAIT" to me. Weird, I know.
Omg, I LOVE this association. Especially because if it is a wizard portrait, it's one of Barty Crouch Jr (who was also played by Tennant!).

Yay, thank you so much for all the detailed comments and the encouragement to keep experimenting, I most definitely will!! :D

Your stuff keeps getting weirder and cooler. Don't see how that could disappoint anyone, least of all me, who loves weird icons like no other! :D

Oh my, does poor Rose actually end up getting lost while time traveling or something? I don't know much about the show besides that the Doctor and his companions get changed up every few seasons. Do they usually come to a sad ending, or is a case of the current Doctor deciding to pass the torch for a happy reason?

Ahhh, now it's perfect to me! Neg space and the strangely awesome muted/vibrant color combo = WIN!

I remembered he'd played Barty Crouch Jr only after I'd submitted the comment. There's something very wizardish about David Tennant, isn't there? :P

Well she gets permanently trapped into a parallel universe, so yeah I'd definitely classify that as getting lost in time and space! and the change of doctors and companions is usually a very dramatic episode, as the regeneration of the Doctor is kinda like dying to him. There's usually some sort of Heroic Sacrifice trope in play. And the companions, well some of them just decide to leave, but more often it's that something bad happens to them too... The show might seem like a sort of fun happy-go-lucky light and often silly scifi thing, but actually there's a lot of drama too and those are probably the plots I like best! :D

And yay I'm glad you like the icon even more now! Never hesitate to give me concrit if there's something like this you notice, I don't always remember to mention it in my posts but it's always fine and beneficial to me :)
