20 Doctor Who icons

Ok, so here is my set for [livejournal.com profile] inspired20in20, round 17 - Nostalgia.

Omg guyyyys. This round inspired me so much and I wanted to make a set inspired by mainly stuff from my own past and somehow tie it to DW and the inspiration post and everything. And I would have, but then exam week and all kinds of deadlines happened and I realized I was making things unnecessarily difficult so uh what you see instead is just a random bunch of icons inspired by the general timey-wimeyness of DW (perfect claim for the round!), some retro styles, and of course the inspiration post.

I have a love/hate relationship with this set cause I put a lot of thought into each icon and was really really inspired like I said and even experimented quite a lot with some things I might like to take further in my future icons, but on the other hand I also ran out of time so I had to accept most of them quicker than I usually would have, so they have billions of technical imperfections and stuff I'd like to tweak ._.

Hope you find something to like anyway! :>

[1-5]
[6-10]
[11-15]
[16-20]

Inspirations:

Icons 1-9 were mostly inspired by in-verse stuff - a lot of the given words fit well with DW. This part contains some s5 spoilers.
1&2: Childhood
3: Flashback - loved that scene in Vincent and the Doctor where Amy sees the dedication on the painting :')
4&5: Remember - forgetting and then remembering has such a big part in Amy's sory on s5, so these icons represent that. 4 is from the scene where Amy sees her ring, with Rory being erased from time, and that scene always gives chills. And 5 is of course a happier one, where Amy remembers the Doctor back into existance.
6: Longing. Why yes, I still love these two, and this scene is so angsty and beautiful. Well, at least until the Master starts talking about food :p
7: Past. A past Master! I haven't actually seen any of them in action yet, but I chose Delgado because based on what i've read I think I'll love him the most. Also he was the original and thus perfect for this theme.
8: This has two inspirations, thematically it was inspired by the theme 'History' as I instantly thought of the lulziness of River impersonating Cleopatra in this ep. Don't ask why, no idea. And visually I was inspired by the deep reds of this icon by [livejournal.com profile] val_valerie.
9: Texture set by [livejournal.com profile] scoobyatemysnax, and I chose this episode cause I wanted as many 'in the past' episodes as possible.

Icons 10-15 were mostly inspired by various retro styles/things and have less to do with the images themselves.
10: Inspired by this icon by [livejournal.com profile] vetica, and also a muted vintagey look in general. This was actually the first icon I made and what the rest of the set was supposed to be like, but something happened and my inspiration just took a U-turn... like it tends to do.
11: Inspired by the theme 'Retro' which first made me think of K9, the retro tin dog ♥ also uses tons of [livejournal.com profile] scoobyatemysnax textures.
12: This too has just 'Retro' as the general theme, although I'm not even sure what type of retro it's trying to be. Maybe like a colorful but a bit worn down poster? ugh idek well I tried :o Oh and ofc, some scooby texture abuse.
13: This certainly tries to look like another sort of retro poster.
14: inspired by/uses [livejournal.com profile] longerthanwedo textures, and also a general vintagey look.
15: composition inspired by retro diskettes ♥ except that's not where you write the label on a real diskette, oops.

Icons 16-20 are more like the types of icons I planned on making, cause they have some meaning to my own past while still using the inspiration post as the starting point. I was halfway into rambling about each of the meanings already but then realized they were not very exciting as stories at all, lol, so I'll just spare you unless you specifically want to know why I did what I did with one of these :) The inspiration post inspirations where the train of thought started were:
16: This icon by [livejournal.com profile] spittingfish
17: textures (all the provided packs)
18: [livejournal.com profile] scoobyatemysnax textures
19: Innocence
20: This icon by [livejournal.com profile] jokermary

I know this set is a bit weird but please share your thoughts anyway, any comments always make me super happy :)

I have some other challenge icons to post and I planned on doing so here but I think I'll leave them for another day cause tiiiiired. One of my new year resolutions will have to be to stop freaking procrastinating and/or signing up for too many things at the same time! :p

[identity profile] angelamaria.livejournal.com 2012-12-21 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I love weird :D These are FANTASTIC, hands down. 2, 3, 6, 10, 11, 12, 13 are my favorites! I don't care if that's one too many favorites, because they are all superb~

[identity profile] sayuri-x.livejournal.com 2012-12-21 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think these icons are weird at all. I think they are classic js with a twist. I really love how the whole set is kinda grungy (which is signature you) with this pop-art twist. Very Andy Warhol-ish.

I'm not into the DW fandom but favs are

4 - classic JS, if i saw this ina bunch of other icons I could point to this as yours. 10 is pretty and 11 is just AMAZING! You merge together a iconic image and picked the perfect text. 17 - Love, love, love the texture use and the inversion etc. and 19 is dark and bright at the same time.

Such a fantastic set! I love how exploratory it is! And creative, definitely not weird! The composition of #3 and #4 is stellar. I love the way you've blended the images in #3, it works so beautifully, and the contrast between the colour and b&w in #4, and the playing with shapes is a lot of fun! I love the deep, earthy, rich colours of #8, and how the dark, muted tones give it such an interesting atmosphere. And the crop of #9 is amazing, and the colours are so gorgeous! The pop-art feel of #12 and #13 is SO COOL. The vibrance but also muted tones of #12 are stunning, and the composition is lovely, and again with the colour and b&w with #13, it just works so well! And I love #15 for that reason as well, just a beautiful composition and use of colour! #18 is all kinds of spectacular as well. The colour combo is beyond beautiful, and I love the negative space and texture use. ITS SO FUN! Seriously, THIS SET IS AWESOME, and all kinds of fun!

Your coloring and texture use is absolutely stunning! Definitely saving a good majority of these.

I am pretty much going to snag every single one of these but I totally love your inspiration and how you accomplished 12 and 19!

I love these, you captured Nostalgia perfectly! I have so many favorites I can't really even begin to list them all xD

Everything here is gorgeous! How do you get better with each post?

[identity profile] halesmoon.livejournal.com 2012-12-21 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
\o/

Everything is so gorgeous! I love this entire post, and I snagged about half of the icons. My favorites are 9 (love the gritty, grungy feel), 12 (the composition is really lovely - I'm both inspired and a bit jealous :P ), and 19 (the bright colors surrounded by all the darkness makes a really nice effect!). I also love how this post feels like half grunge, half pop art. Really, really great batch of icons!

[identity profile] sjlnechnaia.livejournal.com 2012-12-21 04:47 am (UTC)(link)
WOW! what a fantastic retro style set! all icons are wonderful and very creative!

[identity profile] burntheflaws.livejournal.com 2012-12-21 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
These are so gorgeous and inventive! Each one is its own little work of art, with all the texture use and creative compositions. I'm not done with my set yet and this is making me simultaneously shrivel up and be inspired. My favorites are 3, 4, 10, 12 (so so gorgeously vibrant and retro, I adore it), and 18 (loving the color coordination).

[identity profile] erinae.livejournal.com 2012-12-21 06:59 am (UTC)(link)

Holy mother of - oMG THIS POST I JUST CAN'T *takes a deep breath*

Ok.First of all, congrats on completing this on time :D Second of all, I sincerely hope you sign up for the new Ask The Maker when/if you have time because I need to knowww C:

Now. Where do I even begin? I absolutely love the composition of 2. It's really amazing and the colour scheme you chose for it is really fitting. 3 has amazing colouring! 5 is also very beautiful, the negative space, the texture use, the paleness of amy and her striking hair! <3 9 is fantastic! Martha's face is ttly perfect for close crops :D Plus the purpleness is badass. And I feel ~flattered you'd use my textures ♥ I really like vintage icons and since I can't for the life of me work them, I find 10 really inspiring!
I think #12 is my favourite from this batch and I must save it immediately. It's so pop arty and original, I absolutely love it :D 13 is also very vintagey and nice. 16 has amazing colours (omg your colouring skills!!!), 17 is very creative, you smart cookie you :3 And 18 has wonderful texture use!!! 19 is absolutely stunning omg, it's has a bit of a [livejournal.com profile] hauntes feel to it and I love that C:

BEAUTIFUL SET MADE OF ALL KINDS OF WIN ♥

What a creative and unique set you've got going on here! I really love the whole vibe of it! Absolutely perfect for the theme, and your technical creativity really shows. All the awards to #3 specifically because my jaw literally dropped when I saw it. The composition and blending is just...spot on perfect. And the coloring is really pretty and warm as well. A pile of good things and bad things is definitely my favorite. I also looooooove shooty dog thing as well! Really great composition again. I love the retro comic book style you went for there, and I really love the faded greens too. And! And! I love the crack in the wall (#1) a whole lot as well. The muted textured background + details colored in style is really cool all over the post, but I think here, where it is kind of unstated and subtle, it looks the best. Amy really pops from the background without seeming to clash with it. A really solid icon! #6 and #17 are definitely very cool as well. Great job with this set! ♥
