20 LOST icons (S3-4)

Fandoms:
LOST [20]

Here's my set for the 18th round of [community profile] somein30, where we had to create an episode sequence with our icons. Extra Hard mode, so each icon uses a randomized prompt. Explanations under the table.

I chose LOST as my subject, cause it's my favorite show, plus I wanted to continue from where I left off in the original watchnicon project back in 2013-2015. So, the episode span is 3.11-4.07. This sequence has some of the very best episodes of LOST. The S3 finale is split into two because it's consistent with how I did (in watchnicon) the other finales/premieres that have been split on the DVD sets.

Stylewise this is nothing new, but you can't reinvent the wheel after a long hiatus. It's colorful grunge, one of my go-tos, with mostly gradient maps/monochrome colorings because I just don't have the time to color icons anymore, or more accurately I don't want to spend ALL my time iconing like before, so something's gotta give :)

PROMPTS & EXPLANATIONS
(major spoilers for LOST ofc but everyone's seen it by now)

3.11 Enter 77: Plot. This is an action-y episode. Some highlights included in the icon: Flame station, explosives, Mikhail + tense gunpoint scene, and of course Sayid as the central character.
3.12 Par Avion: Character Development. A Claire episode where we learn that her mother is in a coma and she feels guilty about some of the things she said to her previously.
3.13 The Man from Tallahassee: MVP Character. One of my favorite episodes, the Ben/Locke dynamic is on fire. Locke has to be the MVP though cause we finally learn how he ended up in the wheelchair and he does blow up a submarine and join the Others here.
3.14 ExposΓ©: Arch Relevance. Lol of course I get this theme for one of the least relevant episodes. It's about the darkly comedic deaths of two meaningless side characters. There's one scene where Paulo overhears Ben and Juliet plotting, and that of course has been a relevant plot in the past.
3.15 Left Behind: Character Development. It's a Kate flashback episode, but it's more of the same with her, so I picked Hurley instead. The first time you watch the show he seems so inconsenquential, but then at the end he becomes the most important character, so it's interesting to watch how he gets there - like in this episode how he totally manipulates Sawyer into being nicer(!).
3.16 One of Us: Plot. This is all about Juliet joining the survivors' camp and everyone being super suspicious of her, and her trying to prove she's now one of them.
3.17 Catch-22: Arch Relevance. Trippy icon for a trippy episode, the most relevant thing is Desmond continuing to see visions of Charlie's impending doom.
3.18 D.O.C: Random Scene. A bit of a filler episode. I got lucky cause this scene had a wonderful Sun close crop scene and some good blending material with Juliet, I probably would have picked these caps even if I had a free choice!
3.19 The Brig: Underrated. This was HARD cause this episode is very, very highly rated. It ended up in the top 10 in the episode ranking on the awesome Down the Hatch podcast. The episode is known for the dark turns Sawyer and Locke take here, so I focused on a cute lighter scene at the start where Ben thanks Locke for his ~magical influence~ that's making him heal faster :D I've iconned the same quote before but it's been more than 8 years, I can go back to this well xD
3.20 The Man behind the Curtain: Favorite Scene. This episode is incredible, finally we get a Ben flashback! I LOVE the twisted theatrics of the scene where Ben takes Locke to the cabin and pretends to talk to Jacob (actually talking to an empty chair), trying to make Locke feel less special, and then it totally backfires on him when Locke DOES hear something. This scene takes place in a cabin at night so it's very, very dark, but I did my best!
3.21 Greatest Hits: Favorite Scene. Charlie writing this "greatest hits" list makes me emotional every time, it's a bit of a cheat cause he writes it in several scenes, but in this one I specifically focus on the end of the episode where he finishes the list, gives it to Desmond and is ready to dive down to fulfill his destiny.
3.22 Through the Looking Glass pt1: Favorite Scene. This first part is actiony and builds up for the climactic finish. The best part is this scene at the Looking Glass station where several important things happen at once: Bonnie and Greta hold Charlie prisoner, Mikhail shows up, Ben starts to lose his position. It's all very tense and moves the pieces in place for the EPIC ending in the next part.
3.23 Through the Looking Glass pt2: Plot. Ok so I know this episode is mostly known for the WE HAVE TO GO BACK of it all, but, if you look at what actually happens in the plot, the most important thing is that the survivors are finally able to contact someone off the island, this ship that's presumed to come to rescue them.
4.01 The Beginning of the End: Favorite Scene. I love this scene in the flash forwards when Hurley is visited by ghost!Charlie but isn't ready to hear him yet. It's funny, emotional and important foreshadowing all at the same time.
4.02 Confirmed Dead: Most Known For. It's not a very epic or remembered episode, but it does introduce the new science team, which is what I personally remember it for.
4.03 The Economist: Character Development. Some dark character development for Sayid: we learn that in the future he ends up working as a hitman for Ben.
4.04 Eggtown: Arch Relevance. At the end it's revealed that somehow in the future Kate is taking care of Aaron. Reuniting Claire and Aaron ends up being her motivating factor for the rest of the show, so it's definitely the most relevant part.
4.05 The Constant: MVP Character. One of the best and most iconic LOST episodes ever, and there's no question at all that Desmond is the brightest star here - he's the focus of the entire plot and how epic that plot is!!!
4.06 The Other Woman: MVP Character. Controversial choice probably, cause this episode has some of Ben's WORST scenes too (how he speaks to Juliet), but it also has some of his most awesome scenes so the way it balances out for me still makes him the MVP of this episode (I considered Juliet, I do love her and it's her flashback, but no particular scene really blows my mind for her the same way that Ben's mind games both in the past and in the present do).
4.07 Ji Yeon: Plot. Not a lot happens on the island (Sun and Jin are about to go to Locke's camp, Juliet tells Jin about Sun's past affair, then they don't go). The double twist flashes are more memorable, but they're not the main plot, so I just focused on the emotional journey Sun and Jin go on here and how he forgives her in the end.

Wow, that was a lot. Hopefully you found something to like, all feedback is super appreciated and feel free to use any of these! β™₯

Aw thank you so much :D Ever since I watched LOST I haven't been able to find another show that excites me as much, I truly believe it was unique in its epicness!

It was truly special for sure, one of those that stays with you afterwards. It's been a little while since I watched it, maybe I should remedy that!

Ooh yes, I definitely recommend a rewatch! Of course the whole mystery effect gets lessened a bit when you already know all the answers, but then again you can pay more attention to all the clues and foreshadowing. Also, if you like podcasts, there's a fantastic episode by episode recap/review called Down the Hatch, it's very recent but already finished. It's funny and has great analysis of each episode. It's full of spoilers so it's specifically meant for rewatchers, not for people who are seeing it for the first time, so a big recommendation for that too :)

Thanks for the rec!
I do feel like LOST is one of those shows you can watch over and over and still discover new things. It’s quite unique in that regard. I remember watching it for the first time and being hooked.

For me it actually took another try later to get hooked - I was 16 when the show started airing in Finland, I tried watching it but I just found the characters too old :P Some years later I did a full watch on my own and being now closer to the characters' ages myself it was a lot easier to love them and relate to them, and it became my favorite show!

I was about the same age and found it confusing at first, but as an adult I was hooked. I think it is the kind of show you really need to watch closely to understand, especially the final few seasons. A lot of people, including people I was watching with, just didn't get it :/

It was absolutely clear that you would be doing Lost for this! :D

I don't know the show, so I can't comment on the subject choices, but I love the icons! <3

I admit I can't see that you did less coloring than usual (except maybe in 7, 8, 9 which are obviously gradient maps). Those all look perfectly colored to me. <3

I especially like 5, 6, 11, 16, 18, and 20. And 3 - deceptively simple, but with great impact.
neonspider: jr lemons[personal profile] neonspider on September 30th, 2022 03:49 pm (UTC)
I knoow, I feel like at this point every icon maker has their own predictable go-to show and this (along with Doctor Who) is mine :D

Haha, yeah I meant all the gradient map abuse here, it looks colorful, but I don't really count it as "real" coloring cause it's so easy and fast, instant vibrant colors in five seconds :D I like the look, of course I wouldn't use it if I didn't, but I usually try to get at least half of my icons "properly colored" cause then I can feel extra proud of pulling off something hard! But with this set not even half are colored like that, so yeah that's why I feel they're a bit lazy coloringwise, then again the compositions took forever so I gotta stop being a perfectionist and wanting every aspect to be stunning when I know I don't want to put that much time into icons anymore.

Thanks so much for the lovely comment, you listed some surprising favorites (like 6, which I thought would be waayy too bright and neon for anyone but me xD), I'm truly flattered!! β™₯

I understand the ambivalence about not being able to spend *all* your time on iconing and still wanting good results. I can tell you, you did it. They look absolutely stunning. (And, yeah, your compositions are amazing.)

I'm glad you're still here and still making icons! I hope it stays fun for you. <3

Despite the fact that I have been looking at your gorgeous icons from this show for years, I have never actually watched Lost...
Anyway, absolutely phenomenal icons with stunning colors and perfect compositions. I don't know what else to say. I love how you are able to add a lot of elements/levels to an icon without making them feel overcrowded. This set seems like the perfect example of this :D

This entire set is balance and I love different crop! So, so hard to pick favorites because everything here is stunning. But here we go :D I think the second row is my top favorite. Such an amazing set ! I know nothing about this show and never even heard of it , so I was greatly interested to read about the description as well. Might give this one a try also since obviously you're really passionate about the show.
Overall , this set has a very neutral pastel and grungy vibe going on , with lots of heavy layering , text work and some intricate blocking. MY immediate favorite is 14 , the neatness of the bg coupled with how distinctly the subjects stand out because of the contrasting colors n clarity , n the bold tiny size - beautiful. Also , loved the 4 color blocking with bw subjects in 15. 3 is another great icon, crop , the pastel beige color n blue eyes , the smattering of grunge sparkles - perfect.
Great blocking composition is 10 and 16 , especially the way you've used text as borders , that's interesting. I also love the compositions of 5, 6, 9 and 18. The way you've used texts to fill up space in 7 n the mix and match of fonts look amazing. 13 is another lovely monotone icon and the composition is striking. Looking forward to your icons every month as an inspiration .
