Here's my set for [livejournal.com profile] somein30 round 7, which was randomized prompts from 20 different categories. Somehow I thought it was a good idea to randomize 20 different things for everyone. I did that by pre-randomizing 25 sets (to start with, and more as needed), so that only a few maker-specific themes needed to be randomized on the spot. Anyway, these prerandomized sets were numbered, so first I randomized which of the numbered sets were for me and [livejournal.com profile] thyla87. I obviously can't prove that I did it that way, but I hope you can trust that I did. I'm a stickler to rules in general and I love randomizing anyway, I do it a lot even in my normal sets, so just trust me that just randomizing was both more fun AND way easier than if I were to choose any of these prompts!

Obviously since all the inspirations were random, it was more difficult than usual to stick to any specific style. After taking a look at my various inspiration items (esp. the inspiration icon and the book cover) I thought that maybe an extremely flat/matte set with simple vibrant or pastelly "painted on" colors would be the way to go, and that's what I tried to do, but there are a few icons that don't fit that at all, so I guess this is one of my less cohesive sets. I hope it doesn't look like a mess because of that, and that you'll find something to like! Let me know what you think :) Inspirations explained under the cut, hover for fandom! If anyone wants to hear how I randomized a specific cateogry, I'm definitely willing to share my process (I wanted to do it in this post but it's so long already that I'll skip if no one asks xD).

SOMEIN30
[01-05]
[06-10]
[11-15]
[16-20]

1. Random character: Elliot Alderson (Mr. Robot) -> I've only iconed him once before and only seen two episodes, so he was an unlikely character for me to get! I watched the third one and was inspired to make... something? I do like this character and the fact that this show takes place in the IT world.
2. Random icontest challenge: Challenge 258: New Year Resolutions @ [livejournal.com profile] elitesimplicity -> Ok, this was hard cause I don't make resolutions, if I want to change something in my life I just do it right away, doesn't need to be the start of a new year. So I picked something I'm always trying to improve: time management. I have so many personal projects going on at once, it's hard to find time for all of them, but I'm getting better at it. (Unrelated but does anyone else think this looks exactly like my icons in 2013?? I feel like I made a dozen icons of Rose with this coloring, but hey, going back to the classic old tricks isn't always bad.)
3. Random praise: "I love the text arrangement and the way the letters seem to have some sort of a 3D effect." -> Holy shit. This was HARD, WTF is a 3d effect?? Is this it? xD Why did I get this one... Hopefully you now trust that my set is just as randomized as everyone else's, would never have picked this prompt, and almost had to give up on this theme. I am now very curious what the actual 3d effect icon looked like.
4. Random screencap: The Witcher (originally posted here by [livejournal.com profile] vapor) -> So this is where I went off the rails from the style I had decided for this set. This cap just screamed muted coloring to me, I didn't want to force in vibrancy cause I really like how this coloring came out.
5. Random song: Clean Bandit ft. Sean Paul & Anne-Marie - Rockabye (YouTube | Spotify | Lyrics) -> I love this song, so catchy! But it wasn't a good inspiration cause it tells a very specific story about a single mom who's a stripper to support her child. I don't know any characters with that specific story, so I just picked a single mom taking care of her baby, because I found that to be a more important theme in the song than her job.
6. Random tutorial: Snow White's Guide to Blending by [livejournal.com profile] absolutelybatty -> ooohh fuck, this was amazing. But also very very scary to get a blending guide from the blending queen and be expected to make an icon inspired by it. Like, don't compare me to batty, she is perfect and so is the icon in that tutorial, and I barely ever do "real blending" (instead of a collage where I cut out characters and just slap them on the same canvas), but that's exactly why it was great to get to read this now. Anyway, I was inspired by SO many tips from that guide, mostly just how to do the actual blend but also combining text with the blend and some of the really interesting coloring tricks, and look this is where I went even more off the rails with style since there's no way you can give me an absolutelybatty guide for inspiration and expect a matte icon out of it... it's the least set-cohesive icon here but I'm not sorry xD
7. Random movie poster: Bean (1997) -> this should be obvious enough, I got a simple poster so I made a simple icon with the same crop (also Yon-Rogg needs more love)
8. Random quote: "Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive." - Howard Thurman -> The first thing that came to my mind was how Sherlock "comes alive" when solving complex crimes, and that's why he does it more than for a real altruistic willingness to help the victims.
9. Random textures: deny1984, lookslikerain, sweet-season -> used the last one in a very basic way, but hey David Genat looks great with flowers :3
10. Random font: Lovely Excuse -> THE QUOTE IS WRONG ON PURPOSE (kinda). It's actually supposed to be "all cool and disaffected", since that is what Laura accuses Carmilla of pretending to be, but I wrote "cold" accidentally and finished the icon and liked the text arrangement enough. Then I double checked that the quote was correct and damn it was not. I tried correcting it, but... let's just say that's an unfortunate placement for two O's :P I just couldn't unsee boob circles, and I didn't want to rework everything into a different formation, so I figured the meaning is the same this way, who cares, let's just roll with the misquote :D
11. Random trope: Far-Out Foreigner's Favorite Food -> Rygel from Farscape is an alien who loooves Earth's candy selection enough to steal from trick and treaters :D
12. Random remake: this icon -> I never liked the original, it's sloppy. The white border around Carmilla is bad, she doesn't blend into the background at all :/ so I was glad to get a second chance at this cap, I much prefer the new version!
13. Random song title: Walk Away -> This was an easy one, I had just rewatched the pilot of Prison Break so I immediately thought of this scene where LJ walks away from his dad in all his glorious teenage angst :D
14. Random inspiration icon: Icon by [livejournal.com profile] lady_turner -> The main thing I love about the inspiration icon is the coloring, it looks like it's completely painted on a b&w image, so I did exactly that. I also used the background color and focused on hair porn with the image choice and by using some hand painting on Henry's gorgeous man bun. I tried to differentiate the icon enough by making mine a different crop and not using any background textures.
15. Random palette: nothing else matters -> Very straightforward, I tried using all the colors in the palette. This is not a "my type" palette at all but I loved that, I really need to explore interesting color combinations like this more, instead of always going for my stables.
16. Random art: St Dympna, the Virgin Mary, and St Fáinche with scenes from their lives (Harry Clarke, 1930) -> I used the idea of a frame that includes a vertical levels composition.
17. Random album cover: Adu Kwasi, Sweet Sound International Band – Oman Beye Yie -> Muted icon, frame, color pop. (I hate that two frame icons happen to be right next to each other like this, but the idea fit them both so I didn't want to change them...)
18. Random book cover: Cory's School Bus: Meet the Buses by Glow -> this was the most fun I had! I tried matching the color palette and used very simple composition with negative space and simple matte coloring and some of the geometric shapes.
19. Random word: tie -> Ofc I thought of Harvey from Suits first, very simple intepretation, the crop and coloring focus on his tie.
20. Random screencap pool: Dorian Gray (caps by me) -> I used four of these in the same icon, I icon Dorian Gray so much that I feel like I've used all of the decent caps I got at least once before (case in point: icon I'm posting with), so this called for something more special, so I pretty much used all the caps I liked from this selection.

Beautiful designs & colors! Maybe it's weird, but my fave is the one of Rygel, it's so cute & silly! :D The, Doctor Who, Lost, Once Upon a Time, Prison Break, Sherlock & Supernatural ones look fantastic, too.

You're welcome! I can imagine it was complicated! I think it's hard to make icons of Muppets or Jim Henson Creature Shop characters (at least it is when I try). I love how you did the recolor of Rygel's skin, too. Well, it's not not real skin, but you know what I mean. XD I haven't really watched FarScape since it aired, but I still mostly remember it, I think Rygel & Zha'an (sp?) were my favorite characters (back then at least).

I'll probably rewatch it one day! I still remember Moya, Rygel, Aeryn, wormholes, etc. the characters & settings are unique so it's easy to remember it. :)

THIS WAS SUCH AN AMAZING ROUND! I love your set, and your explanations.

The "time management" icon is brilliant.

The random praise is hard to figure out O_O, I love what you did with it! The text certainly looks 3D to me. (Funnily, I got this comment last week: "I love the whole almost 3D effect you've got going on in #1" for this icon:

- now this does *not* clear up what people mean when they say 3D, does it? :D )

hey David Genat looks great with flowers :3

:D He sure does. I love how he's so small and the amount of blocky color around him makes him look like a bit of a wallflower. Perfect composition! <3

THE QUOTE IS WRONG ON PURPOSE

But but but... triple boob! :DDDD

Love Rygel and his candy collection! The icon remake came out beautiful, and the coloring and hairpainting in 14 is perfect. I love the text placement in 15 (and it still looks very much like one of your icons, even if the palette itself is not your go-to combo).

That artwork is really tough as inspiration! Love the result! It still looks church-y. :D

Love the hair in 17. 18 is AMAZING. That's some really great result from that inspiration. I had so much fun with the poster and book cover and album cover inspos, I can't even tell you. That was such a great idea!

In short: awesome set! Thank you so much for the idea with the randomizing! <3

I love love #2! It's so old-school you and I love it! (I swear I wrote that before I read your own comment about the icon xD)
The text work on everything is on point as usual!
My other faves are 4, lovely muted colors, 10, love the colored text against the b&w, 12, love the candy colors and the heart, 18, such creative cut-out and use of colors from the book cover, 20, gorgeous color combo!

[identity profile] tinebrella.livejournal.com 2021-03-29 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
OH MY GODDDDDDDDDD. Look at that! *_______*
I was afraid you wouldn't take part in this challenge because who would pick the prompts for you?? and at some point I even thought to send you 20 prompts but I didn't know where to start, they wouldn't be actually random and then maybe you would be like WOW WHAT A WEIRDO. So I didn't. But yes, I'm a weirdo.
ANYWAY.
I LOOOOOVE THIS POST.
I love your crazy colors, your crazy compositions and yes YOUR BIG BLOCKY TEXT.
Like, for me icons 1, 2 and 3 are the best of the best. When I think of your icons, I think of that kind of icons because it's your signature style and it's glorious.
So I'm going to wax poetics about them.

1. I love the monochromatic coloring, how you made the reds and the dark shadows really pop by adding the acid green insect, texture and text. The composition is just so balanced and it's hard to tell where the coloring ends and the composition begins.

2, oh 2. The fav of the favs. How I love the color combination of matte yellow, violet/purple and bright pink. And not one but three clocks! And yes, the composition is busy, but somehow — HOW — it's not cluttered? It's just interesting and creative and lovely. HOW.

And lastly, 3. THAT TEXT. And again, the super bold monochromatic coloring. But THAT TEXT. That's the level of text magic I aim for. Different fonts, and colors, and styles, and size, and accents and again, it works seamlessy, it's not messy at all, on the contrary, it looks classy and all kinds of amazing.

... I also adore 18 and how you made that icon from that book cover. Because you look at the icon and you look at the poster and you're like OF COURSE, YEAH, I SEE. But it's so amazing that you were able to see the potential for that icon in that poster.

... and I loved reading through your explanations because:
I hate that two frame icons happen to be right next to each other like this
it physically pained me that I had to post the icons in the prompt order! xD

[identity profile] abyss-valkyrie.livejournal.com 2021-03-29 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been looking at this post for a while today and wanted to wait until work finished so I could shower your awesome post with the praise it deserves!
That fly in the first icon is such an unusual accessory-I love it! The time management one is seriously something we all need, lmao!I love your take on that with Rose and the clock! The muted colouring in 4 looks so lovely! The inspo from the song is so clever! The blending icon looks so amazing-love the variour colours and fonts added in it too! Lol,that's a fun movie poster!:D I like the flower texture and soft colour of his skin and hat in 9!
The remake icon is very cute,I will say,the original was also very pretty!XD
I just love the flat style colouring in 14, the hair strands and the colours you used!
The whole of last row is so cool!I love the way your poster and cover inspired icons came out! Also that Dorian Gray one-aaah,it makes the movie look very fun and comic!Lmao! Love that!

The theme of this round is so incredible. I love reading everyone's ramblings and thoughts on the prompts :D

I absolutely adore 6, the colors, light, composition, and text are all so prefect. And it just reminds me of the Star Wars icon I'm using which I love.
The colors in this post are gorgeous, especially on 2, 4, 15, and 18. I also really like the combination of black&white with a bit of color on 10, 13, and 19.

[identity profile] rosy-nic.livejournal.com 2021-03-31 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, these are amazing every icon is its own piece of art, your prompts fit each one you have created, my favourites are #2 and #8 :)

[identity profile] n-iinza.livejournal.com 2021-04-02 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
These are so gorgeous and colorful! Love the set!
I love the colors of 2 and 3, both so vibrant. 5 is really sweet and the softness really works here. The blending of 6 is amazing and the text placement works really well! I really like the background of 9. The colored text of 10 works great with the black and white background. The soft colors of 12 really works well with the image. I love the text placement of 15. The composition of 18 is really interesting! I love the different colors and blocks of 20.

Damn, how didi I miss this awesome post? Your compositions and text work slay! Also I love the pastel colors. I love 9, 19 and 18 the most, but I'm saving a bunch!

[identity profile] kitamikeita.livejournal.com 2021-04-04 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
First of all, the challenge was beautiful. Even though personally I got less than ideal prompts (just my luck lol), I still loved doing it and maybe the added effort I had to make to come up with something I liked made it even more fun and rewarding in the end. Also thank you so much for the effort you put into making this unique challenge :)

Now. Let's talk about this gorgeous set! I don't even know where to look first. So many pretty colors and compositions.

I think I have to do a more schematic comment if I want a chance to organize all I'm thinking of writing:

1. I love the coloring and composition in this one.
Mr. Robot is one of my favorite shows ever. I hate resolutions too, mainly because for the most part they are empty words (in my experience lol)
2. This is my absolute favorite out of them all! It's has grabbed my eye from the first time I opened this post. And I keep ending up looking at it. It's utterly perfect to me: the coloring, color combinaiton, the gorgeous composition! The attention to details! (I see the alternate yellow on those roman numerals).
About the time managment thing ... same LOL (except for the fact that I'm not getting better at it, clearly x°D) Also, with this challenge in general I feel like I thought about the "old times" a lot, like fandoms, tutorials, remakes. It's been nostalgic but nice.
3. I love this one too. Dang it. It's that beautiful magenta I think. Also I love the text composition, it really wasn't straightforward from that praise.
4. I agree, this muted coloring it's beautiful. Really simple and peculiar at the same time. I love the 'strange' colors.
5. I just love this pastel colors. Also I really like them together and how you used the song as inspiration.
7. Beautiful crop and coloring.
9. It might be basic but it's gorgeous. I sound like a broken record but I love the bright lime/yellow color.
10. Boob circles ... ahahahahah :') anyway, I really like the composition and the grunge feel of it.
12. I like the new one better too. As usual, love the colors and composition.
14. Love this pink/lilac shade and also how you took elements from the inspiration icon.
17. I like how you took the elements from the album cover. (Also I'm now doubting the fact that I could change the order of the prompts -?- D:)
18. I love how this turned out in relation to the book cover. Simple but quirky at the same time.

[identity profile] thyla87.livejournal.com 2021-04-11 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
