oh, 1000% agreed with all of this!

but somehow those anime series from 00s were potraying it all so... uncomfortably.
I didn't know it was a general common thing in anime from that era, since I only watched this one (probably should have tried something else first...). But yeah, I think it's the lack of intentional portrayal as dysfunctional (iirc it was totally romanticized instead of just going full on with the darkness?), and also the infantilization going on with Shuichi, like, he was supposed to be an older teenager I think???, but acted like a total child, which just makes it totally impossible to see what an older grumpy guy like Yuki could possibly see in him.

... that's why I prefer watching the queerbait shows tbh. Shipping is always more fun than canon :D
DUDE, THANKS FOR SAYING THIS I feel so guilty for having this exact thought but.. yeah. I mean of course I understand why representation is a good thing and all, so I shouldn't be asking for queerbaiting (I prefer the term "ship tease" cause it doesn't sound sooo bad and isn't gender specific :p), but like, established relationships are always either boring or totally unhealthy dramafests so I prefer just focusing on the looong drawn out part of chemistry before anything actually happens, and that's why I prefer things to stay noncanon - it's like the ship is stuck in my favorite part of the relationbship forever :) (I'd be the worst writer/showrunner ever, fans would hate my guts xD)
