How's it coming? I am skipping this month, the theme is not my thing.
It's going ok, I only need one more icon and to finish a few and to select which I'll include in the actual set and which ones will be alts. I was super inspired by the inspo post. The theme is not like anything I've ever made but I love my set this far, I mean I can never be 100% happy with a post but I do like it much much more than this one! I don't think I've ever actually watched a film noir movie, but if my understanding of the genre is at all correct, I think I did ok capturing it. Or at least some parts of it.
Why would they?
I think it's that the more things you try to do in an icon, the more can go wrong. For example if I'm using multiple caps, the chances that at least one of them is badly colored, contrasted, sharpened or awkwardly placed are much greater than if I only used one cap! Every element I add is another risk that can go wrong. Also, I notice that at least personally when I make a simple icon I use more time of the basics (quality, lighting, coloring, contrast) than if I make a super complex composition. Which means that a minimalistic icon will be more polished, and 'polish' is definitely something I look for in other makers' icons, even if it's not that present in my own.
Besides, even a perfectly made complex icon won't be everyone's cup of tea, there are so many people who think they look busy, messy, unfocused, bury the subject, overworked, nonsensical etc no matter what. But is there anyone who will hate a well-made minimalistic icon? Therefore I've always felt that there is a dilemma I need to solve - do I want to take the greater chance that more people are going to like my work, or do I follow my own inspiration and what I have more fun creating? Obviously I've chosen the latter 9 times out of 10, but it's not an easy decision to make.
