This was super interesting to read! None of this sounds very difficult, but coming up with an idea or just playing around until it works is not something I do often enough.

That's very similar to how I do cutouts with masks since I also can't seem to master the pen tool. I usually duplicate the image, invert the colors, use average blur and then maximize the saturation to get a color that doesn't look like the image :D
