20 TW + BTVS icons for 20muses

Fandoms:
Buffy the Vampire Slayer [10]
Teen Wolf [10]

This is my [livejournal.com profile] 20muses round 2 entry! More info about the icon themes under the spoiler cut. LOOOVED this challenge. I chose two very different episodes for my claim: Teen Wolf 3.18 Riddled (a very dramatic episode) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer 6.07 Once More with Feeling (very funny ep, though with serious undertones).
Due to the nature of the round and me torturing myself with the hard mode, it's not a surprise that the styles in this post are ALL OVER THE PLACE and this set is faaaar from looking cohesive, but well, hopefully that means there's something for everyone here? :)

Hope you'll enjoy these! I definitely enjoyed making them.

[01-05]
[06-10]
[11-15]
[16-20]
Here are my inspirations:

TEEN WOLF
1 - Box1 technical: stock + silhouette
2 - Box2 art: all_malocks (far crop + close crop) + queen_bartonia (unnatural coloring)
3 - Box4 color: dark blueish grey + dark red
4 - Box4 song: Former Vandel - I was So Sure (this was almost too easy, pretty sure this song IS about this episode! o.O) + 30 Seconds to Mars - Hurricane (lyrics). I hate this icon it looks like a crappy absolutelybatty ripoff, sorry .___. i'd remake it if I had the time!
5 - Box1 art: poisonfield (surrounded by text pieces) + starkwars (completely obscured subject). in case the concept isn't clear, the... thingy... is meant to symbolize the Void that has taken over Stiles. Part of the thing is actually the painting from Stiles' room which some people took as foreshadowing!
6 - Box3 technical: text + blocking
7 - Box3 song: Paramore - Brick by Boring brick (butterfly wings!) + PVRIS - My House (bw + color)
8 - Box4 technical: close crop + scenery
9 - Box4 texture: mrs_padfoot + lookslikerain (idk if you can tell i used this one, it's pretty subtle)
10 - Box2 art: longerthanwedo (coloring style, crop) + queen_bartonia again (big text)

BTVS
11 - Box4 song: Jona Selle - Applause (it's a song about performing -> took a cap from Buffy's final song) + The Weeknd - In the Night (visuals: neon, blurred vision effect)
12 - Box2 song: Anna Clendening - Who You Are (lyrics) + Sia - Alive (visuals: muted icon, full body crop)
13 - Box6 texture: 12feethigh (veeery subtly used for lighting) + loseanhour
14 - Box1 word: easy + old (->vintage look)
15 - Box5 texture: stewark + mrs_padfoot
16 - Box4 technical: profile + closecrop
17 - Box5 word: sunshine + nature
18 - Box6 song: Lana del Rey - Dark Paradise (darkness. lol i'm so imaginative with interpretations) + Sam Tsui - Let It Go/Let Her Go (the theme of letting someone go)
19 - Box6 word: futuristic + amusing (never let me use this theme combo ever again cause this is what happens i try to make a demon look like a scifi show alien because WHY NOT :D)
20 - Box6 texture: 12feethigh again for lighting + accio-glow

Snag all you want, credit if you want to, but don't hotlink and please don't use my icons as bases or resources
Feel free to watch the comm :)
Comments would make me super happy ♥

Gorgeous as always! I was looking forward to seeing your entry, and it definitely lived up to my expectations. 1 is such a creatively awesome icon, and I love the muted colors and that small framing of fox!Stiles. Love the text work in 5. 7 is full of such explosive colors and stock use. 8 is another beauty with those muted colors and the fantastic texture and text use. I really like how there's a bit of his skin separated into a box on the side, and it looks like a stock add-on (tape or something), but it's really just a cool shape created by the texture. Nice vibrant colors in 9, pastel coloring in 13 (the floral stock texture also fits so well), CRAZY painted and futuristic look in 19 (he looks like he's a part of Avatar, but the vibrant red version), and combo of that fun texture and text use in 20 in combination with the bright, vibrant colors.

My favorites, though, are 14 and 15. Daaamn they're amazing. There's something so simple yet so wonderful about 14. I love the little decorated banner behind the text, which, by the way, is flawlessly executed. And the figures have the most beautiful vintage coloring. It all fits together so splendidly. And 15. Wow. Your texture use is always on point, and this is one of the best examples. The textures just work so cohesively together, and the way you framed and colored her to pop out while still blending in to the background is just expertly handled. I could stare at this icon for days.

Oh my god, this comment!! Thank you so much! ♥
1 was one of the most difficult ones because I first chose the styles I wanted (stock + silhouette) but then I didn't want it to be the most obvious way to combine those (aka. silhouette filled with stock). I kiiiinda still did use that but I also tried to make it a bit different by using another tiny cap and also fill the bg with different stock. It's still not quite as creative as I wanted it to be (there should be so many options with a theme like stock!) but I'm very glad you think it works!
Yeah, I got really lucky with the texture I found for 8! :>
That's pretty much exactly the look I was goign for in 19, so I'm super happy you got that vibe from it.
And yay 14 and 15 were some of my own faves too, and possibly the most representative of my style(s) sooo of course I'm extra happy that you chose them as faves :)

What a colourful bunch of icons! :D

You colouring, texture and composition skills are amazing, as per usual. I really love 3. The colouring and lighting are perfect! The composition of 7 and 10 are so cool. The stock texture looks like it belongs in those icons! I love love the texture use in 15. Even the colouring is gorgeous! And last but not the least, 16 is perfect! The texture, the text, the crop, all fabulous!

Great job! :)

Aww thank you so much! Not a lot of people have mentioned liking 16 so I'm extra happy that you like it so much :3 it's not my usual style (I never know what to do with closecrops D:) so I was really out of my depth there; super happy if you think I somehow pulled it off!

How do you do color? I just can't even like with 15, 17, and 20. You make it look so easy. I love your text work in 16 so much!
neonspider: bocke collage blend[personal profile] neonspider on February 29th, 2016 10:00 am (UTC)
Wow, thank you! ♥ I'm surprised it looks easy cause it's definitely not, a coloring takes even more time than text for me and text takes freaking forever :D

I don't even know how to start commenting on this set!!! I don't watch any of these shows yet your icons are giving me feels. When I first looked at the set last week when you posted it, I was trying to put words on it and "futuristic vintage" came to my mind. The choice of fonts, shapes and colours in 9 for example, bring an alien sciency colour party vibe, and I get that feel from icons like 2 and 19 as well. (I know you said it didn't feel cohesive to you but I definitely see a style unity here, like a darker, angstier storytelling feel with all your technical skills put to use.) I'll never be over the consistent boldness that keeps bringing you to new icon heights. ♥

Favourites are: 1 (the silhouettes and texture blending with that colour combo would have been enough to make it great but the small framed subject "finishes" it in the most perfect way), 5 (always loving your way of including so much text in blocks and making it both complex and readable, and the brush/texture over his face is really fun to look at!).
Then I realise I love absolutely everything from the last three row, so this could take a while, haha. So instead of stupid descriptions with "wow" (because that's how I feel about all of them, basically), I'm going to focus on the things I really love. There's a darker, grungy thing going on that reminds me of some of your older icons and that does an amazing job giving an atmosphere to the set. And I love that you use it on muted icons like 8 (that blocking and stock use is incredible), 12 and 18 but also on vibrant ones like 11, 15 and 16 (okay maybe they're not vibrant but definitely more colourful). 11 is scary in the best possible way and the text and texture use on 16 are so good. And 15 is everything I love in an icon so I'm going to take it home with me, probably. Perfect colour combination and complex textured background. And her painty hair looks amazing. Then there are the vintage but still beautifully colourful icons like 13, 14 (that text arrangement is so great) and 17 (love the more vibrant colours and the lighting). In 20 I love that you used the triangle texture as a way to make the text pop even more.
6 has perfect everything, I love the colours. The combination of blocking and blending is so clever and the text is such a nice finishing touch. 19 looks crazy and amazing, I love the painting with neon colours so much! It catches the eye immediately and is just really great.
And last but not least I'd like to talk about 7 and 10. Because B&W + colour is not something I particularly but here it works so well. The blending of the subject in the butterfly texture is brilliant and looks amazing. And in 10 it's the colour combination and font choice that works so well with the b&w background.

And here ends this ridiculously long comment that probably doesn't make much sense. I didn't take the time to comment on your flawless work in a really long time so I'm trying to make up for it. ;) ♥

Oh my god this comment is so wonderful!!!! Thank you so much *___* ♥ but, the first thing I must address is that you never, ever have ANYTHING to make up for and I never want commenting on my sets to be a chore for anyone, much less my friends and favorite lj people like you. So please don't even consider that aspect. But of course I am indeed super happy and flattered that you chose to write all of this!

I'm particularly happy that you see some sort of theme in all this chaos, and one that sounds very cool when described like that. Seriously, now I kinda want to intentionally go for 'futuristic vintage' but I have no idea how :D
oohh I forgot that my icons used to be slightly darker. That was not a stylistical choice but simply the fact that my monitor was different :p I got this new one about a year ago and suddenly my older work seemed dark, muted and badly contrasted, and kind of yellow... So if there's been a shift to more vibrant colors and brightness, that's why. Now if I only knew which monitor is closer to the iconmakers' average monitor!

Thanks again for taking the time, I know you're busy so I'm extra honored. ♥

Woah! The Buffy musical is so well suited for bright primary colors. I love all of them. Especially 12, with its text that is not from the lyrics, and the text style in 14. Wow.

That's such an amazing use of the texture in 20! So so gorgeous.

(and you did the hard way on all of them, of course.)

Aww thank you so much for the lovely comment! I love that episode, and I knew it would be great for iconing, I would have had so many ideas for it even without the challenge but then had to come up with new ones when the dice rolls wouldn't really fit with the original ideas I got. But that was fun too and led to less expected results, and I can use my other ideas some other time!

LOL yeah I had to go with the hard way, though I'm not sure if it was harder. It put more limitations so in that way a bit less freedom and therefore imagination was necessary, so maybe I actually took the easier route :D

Great icon set! Sorry about the late comments - I've been going back and forth with things. :)

That's incredible that you chose the hard mode for all of those. It was difficult enough on the easy mode, I can't even imagine doing hard for *all* of them. Definitely a challenge! My favorites are 18, 4, 3, 20, 19, 7, and 2.

18 is pretty awesome with the lyrics, the choice of images and not putting them in different size sets yet keeping a balance between them, and the choice for the basic monochrome to make the characters stand out even stronger.

I think it's funny that you didn't like #4, because I think it's great. It probably helps that I have no clue what the knockoff you're thinking about is. ^^ But I like th shades of blue and purple and pink, the cap and angle of her face, with the creative text placement that doesn't obscure her.

3 is stark and clear with a good choice of color combinations - I really like that for the background - and a focus on the emotions of the character.

How can one not like the Bunnies? ;D Except for her, of course! (Loved that song ^^).

Thanks for the lovely comment! Hard mode probably made it easier for me, having more limitations/requirements helped me get ideas.

I don't think 4 resembles any particular icon by her, but light textures + rotated text with a tiny caps + bigger words in cursive is definitely a style I associate with one of my favorite makers, [livejournal.com profile] absolutelybatty. Sadly this occurred ot me a bit too late, but well, I'm glad you like the icon anyway!
