don't worry I had the exact same reaction when I watched it, but I was intrigued enough by the mystery surround it (like wHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?? EXCUSE ME RUDE?) I kept watching xp It's definitely a darker anime but it's so beautifully plotted and emotional and impactful. It's been a while since I watched it, but it's certainly on the top of my lists (though I do agree it is VERY different than Free xp)
